🌻 Frequently Asked Questions 🌻
General Rule: Most vegetables and flowers are started indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your region’s Last Expected Frost Date.
The Best Source: Always check the back of your seed packet, as it provides the specific timing for that variety in relation to the last frost date.
Slow Growers: Plants like celery, eggplant, and peppers often need 8-10 weeks or more.
A good rule of thumb is to plant a seed two to three times its width in depth.
Tiny Seeds: Very fine seeds (like lettuce or poppy) should be sown thinly on the surface and barely covered with a fine layer of soil or just pressed into the surface, as some require light to germinate.
Large Seeds: Large seeds (like beans or peas) can be planted 1 to 2 inches deep
Yes, it’s highly recommended to use a Seed Starting Mix.
Why: This mix is sterilized (which helps prevent fungal diseases like “Damping Off”), is finely sifted, and has no large particles. It holds moisture well but is light enough for tender young roots to grow easily.
Avoid: Do not use heavy garden soil, which can compact, harbor weed seeds, and increase the risk of disease
Plant 2 to 3 seeds per hole/cell.
Why: Not all seeds will germinate (the germination rate is rarely 100%). Planting a few extra ensures you get at least one seedling.
Thinning: Once the seedlings have their first set of true leaves, snip off the weaker seedlings at the soil line, leaving only the strongest one to grow in that spot. Do not pull them out, as this can damage the roots of the seedling you want to keep.
This is called legginess and is caused by inadequate light. The seedling is stretching itself thin, desperately reaching for a light source.
Solution: Move the seedlings to a much brighter location (like a professional grow light), or place grow lights much closer to the plants (typically 2-4 inches above the tops of the seedlings).
It varies by plant type and storage conditions, but generally, most vegetable seeds remain viable for 2 to 3 years.
Long-lived: Seeds like lettuce, tomato, and cucumber can last 4-6 years.
Short-lived: Seeds like parsnip, onion, and corn often lose viability quickly and are best used within 1 year
